My work for upgrading democracy
I am a Senior Associate with the Co-Intelligence Institute, a USA based non-profit org. I support its founder Tom Atlee by promoting the Wise Democracy project and its associated pattern language. We engage in consultancy for local government, communities and organisations that see the value in co-creating deeply participatory cultures that generate policies and activities for the long term quality of life. I run workshops on Wise Democracy at conferences internationally and in the UK. We are working towards forming a community of practice around this vast resource that highlights dynamic factors and design principles which can make an activity, organisation or community more wisely self-governing.
I've been involved with a major project in the London Borough of Newham advising the administration of Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz in implementing innovative forms of participatory democracy. One aspect of this has been a cycle of 32 Community Assemblies from September 2018 to March 2019.
I'm involved with organising, facilitating and convening meetings and events with Assemblies for Democracy which are part of an urgently needed and unfolding conversation about how we can achieve a much deeper and inclusive level of democracy throughout the UK. We are currently working on a collective process to create a Citizen-led Constitutional Convention and forming an alliance of democracy campaigns that can act together to campaign for this.
I am the founder of the YouTube channel called Reinventing Democracy.
There's a growing sense that our current political systems are leading us towards greater division rather than enabling people to come together to tackle the enormous challenges the world faces today. This channel is dedicated to investigating people, organisations and movements from the UK and around the globe who are working to upgrade our democratic systems so that they're fit for the realities of the 21st century. I'm also working with a fantastic group of people on a U.lab project of the same name. You'll find a series of articles on that project here.
